Why Your Hip Hurts?
Hip pain shows up in different ways. Some people feel a sharp pinch in the front of the hip. Others feel deep soreness on the side. Some notice pain traveling into the thigh or buttock. These patterns tell us which structure is irritated.
Common symptoms include:
- Pain when standing up from a chair
- Pain when walking or climbing stairs
- Sharp pinching in the front of the hip
- Tightness across the groin
- Pain on the outside of the hip when sleeping on your side
- Soreness after long drives
- Pain that moves into the thigh or buttock
- Stiffness after sitting
- Trouble bending or lifting the leg
If you see yourself here, an evaluation helps pinpoint exactly what’s causing the problem.

What causes hip pain?
Hip pain has many possible drivers:
- Arthritis such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis causing cartilage breakdown and joint degeneration
- Injuries or structural issues such as labral tears, femoroacetabular impingement, bursitis or tendon and ligament strain
- Fractures, dislocations or trauma especially in older adults or people with osteoporosis
- Referred pain or biomechanical issues from the lumbar spine, pelvis or sacroiliac region
- Daily habits such as prolonged sitting, weak hip or core muscles and poor movement mechanics

Hip pain treatment plans may involve therapies designed to improve flexibility, mobility, muscular balance, and joint movement. At Elite Spine & Health Center, patients may benefit from Myofascial Release, Sports Rehabilitation, Chiropractic Adjustment, and Dry Needling, to help address mobility restrictions and soft tissue dysfunction affecting the hips and surrounding structures.

How we evaluate hip pain at Elite Spine
At our Westchase (Houston) or Spring location we begin with a full history: your symptoms, work/sport habits, prior injuries and movement patterns. Then we perform targeted testing:
- Gait and posture analysis
- Hip joint motion, strength and flexibility testing
- Orthopedic and functional tests to identify the source of pain such as joint, tendon or nerve
- When indicated we coordinate imaging such as X-ray or MRI or refer to specialists for labral tear, impingement or fracture evaluation
We aim not just to reduce your pain but to restore function and prevent recurrence.
Non-surgical treatment options in Houston & Spring
Your plan will be tailored to your findings and goals, and may include:
- Chiropractic adjustments and mobilization to improve hip joint and pelvis mechanics
- Soft tissue work such as myofascial release or Graston for tight muscles around the hip and pelvis
- Dry needling and laser therapy for pain reduction and tissue healing
- Radial Pulse Wave (Shockwave) therapy for chronic tendon or bursitis-type issues around the hip
- Therapeutic exercise and rehab focused on hip strength, core stability, movement patterns and balance
- Ergonomic and movement-pattern coaching to optimize sitting, standing, stair use and walking
- Active lifestyle guidance such as adjusting activity, walking programs and avoiding harmful load patterns

What you can do at home
What you do outside the clinic affects your progress. Try this:
- Limit long periods of sitting and take standing or movement breaks frequently
- Sleep on a supportive surface and avoid lying consistently on the painful hip side
- Do your home exercise plan consistently, especially hip mobility and glute or hip strength
- Use ice for recent flare-ups or heat for chronic stiffness as directed
- Gradually return to walking, stair use or your sport or work tasks with proper alignment
When hip pain needs urgent attention
While most hip pain responds to conservative care, seek immediate medical evaluation if you notice:
- A fall or trauma followed by inability to walk or bear weight
- Sudden hip pain with leg changes such as shortening or external rotation suggesting a fracture
- Unexplained fever, redness or swelling around the hip joint which could indicate infection
- Progressive muscle weakness or neurovascular symptoms
Hip pain is any discomfort in either or both of the joints attaching your legs to your torso. You might not feel hip pain directly in the center of your hip. Instead, it may appear closer to the groin or upper thigh.
In any case, severe or long-lasting hip pain might indicate an injury or condition that requires individualized care.
Pain isn’t always the sole symptom of a hip condition or injury. You should also report symptoms that come with hip pain such as stiffness, weakness, and inflammation. These other symptoms might help the team at Elite Spine and Health Center make a faster or more accurate diagnosis.
When you come in with hip pain, the Elite Spine and Health Center team examines your hip with a physical exam and asks about your medical history. Imaging tests can help highlight areas of damage that need specific treatment.
Like other joints, your hips include bones, cartilage, a network of muscles and ligaments, blood vessels, and nerves.
Hip pain can originate in any of the structures within a hip and can come from an acute injury or degeneration that happens over time. Sometimes, even an acute hip injury can lead to chronic hip pain.
If you experience hip pain and other symptoms that often come with it like stiffness, it might be due to:
- Osteoarthritis
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Hip fracture
- Bursitis
- Tendonitis
Among possible hip pain causes, including those not listed, tendonitis is by far the most prevalent. It often comes from overusing your hip during exercise or other actions involving repeated movements, but it tends to resolve itself in a few days.
It takes an individualized approach to treat hip pain, and the team at Elite Spine and Health Center can direct you to treatments that address the underlying cause.
While treating hip pain and other joint pain types, you may need to rely on some home behavior modifications to get the most from your treatments in the office.
Your options at Elite Spine and Health Center include:
- Chiropractic adjustments
- Physical therapy
- Dry needling
- Therapeutic ultrasound
- E-stim
- Myofascial release
During your regular visits to Elite Spine and Health Center for hip pain management, the team can change your treatment plan at any time to better suit your needs and treatment goals.
