What Sciatica Feels Like

Sciatica follows predictable nerve patterns. These patterns help reveal where the irritation starts.

  • Numbness, tingling, or pins and needles along the buttock, thigh, calf, or foot
  • Burning or electric pain down one side of the body
  • Sharp pain that shoots from the lower back into the hip, leg, or foot
  • Pain that increases when sitting, driving, or standing from a seated position
  • Tightness or pulling sensation through the hamstring or glute
  • Weakness in the leg or foot during walking or climbing stairs
  • Pain that eases when walking but returns when sitting
  • Trouble finding a comfortable sleep position
  • Pain flare-ups triggered by bending, lifting, or twisting

If these symptoms repeat, your nerve needs a targeted evaluation.

Conditions That Causes Sciatica

Sciatica is a nerve irritation pattern, not a diagnosis by itself.

We evaluate the most common sources, including:

  • Disc irritation
  • Joint restriction in the lower back
  • Piriformis-related nerve irritation
  • Tight hip muscles compressing the nerve
  • Poor movement patterns when bending or lifting
  • Weak core or hip stabilizers
  • Posture that increases pressure on the nerve
  • Spinal alignment issues
  • Nerve tension related to sitting or driving

Your exam shows which structure is irritating the nerve.

When to Get Evaluated

Sciatica needs attention when you experience:

  • Pain spreading into the leg
  • Tingling or numbness in the foot
  • Weakness when standing or walking
  • Pain that worsens with sitting or bending
  • Trouble feeling the ground when walking
  • Flare-ups that return weekly or monthly
  • Pain that limits daily activities

Earlier care leads to better outcomes.

How We Diagnose Sciatica

A sciatica evaluation checks the entire nerve pathway from the lower back to the foot. We identify where the nerve is irritated and what movements increase or reduce symptoms.

Your exam includes:

  • Lower back range-of-motion testing
  • Hip and glute strength testing
  • Leg raise nerve tension tests
  • Joint mobility evaluation
  • Palpation for muscle tightness
  • Core stability checks
  • Gait and movement pattern assessment
  • Reflex and sensory testing

This reveals whether the issue comes from a disc, joint, muscle, or movement pattern.

Self‑care & Prevention Tips

Keep moving, avoid prolonged bed rest, and pace activities (short, frequent walks). Heat or cold may help comfort. If symptoms flare, modify aggravating positions and follow your provider’s advice.

When to Seek Care Promptly

  • Lumbar disc herniation, spinal stenosis, or spondylolisthesis
  • Degenerative changes (bone spurs), prior back injury
  • Work that involves heavy lifting/twisting or long periods of sitting
  • Higher risk with age and in some metabolic conditions (e.g., diabetes)

Sciatica Q & A

Sciatica is a painful condition characterized by sharp, shock-like sensations that travel down your lower back, over your buttocks, and into your legs and feet.

It occurs when your sciatic nerve –– the longest nerve in your entire body –– becomes compressed by a herniated disc or a bone spur.

Most cases of sciatica resolve on their own and respond to at-home treatments like ice and rest. If your symptoms persist, get worse, or interfere with your daily routine, contact the team at Elite Spine and Health Center right away.

If you have sciatica, it’s normal to experience sharp, burning sensations in your lower back, buttocks, hips, and legs. Often, the pain is worse when you cough, sneeze, or make a sudden movement.

As the condition gets worse, you might also experience tingling or numbness in your feet and toes that make it difficult to stand, walk, or maintain your balance.

Anyone can experience sciatica, but several factors may increase your risk, including:

  • Being middle-aged or older
  • Being overweight or obese
  • Working a job that requires you to lift, twist, or carry objects
  • Sitting for long periods

You’re also more likely to experience sciatica if you have diabetes.

To diagnose sciatica, your Elite Spine and Health Center provider reviews your medical history and asks about your symptoms, including when they started, what they feel like, and if any activities like exercising or sitting for extended periods make them worse.

Next, they conduct a physical exam. During the exam, your provider tests your muscle strength and reflexes. They ask you to walk on your toes or heels and have you squat down and stand back up. These exercises tend to aggravate sciatica pain, so it helps confirm a diagnosis.

If your provider suspects your symptoms are due to a herniated disc or a bone spur, they might also order diagnostic imaging tests, like X-rays, an MRI, or a CT scan.

Treatment of sciatica depends on several factors, including the severity of your symptoms, your age, and your medical history. The team at Elite Spine and Health Center might recommend:

  • Spine and extremity adjustments
  • Sports rehabilitation
  • Nonsurgical spinal decompression therapy
  • The Graston® Technique manual therapy
  • Myofascial Release
  • E-stim
  • Therapeutic ultrasound
  • Intersegmental traction
  • Custom orthotics
  • Biofreeze® products
  • Dry needling

The goal of sciatica treatment is to relieve your pain and encourage your mobility.
